    Multimodal Emotion Recognition among Couples from Lab Settings to Daily Life using Smartwatches

    Couples generally manage chronic diseases together and the management takes an emotional toll on both patients and their romantic partners. Consequently, recognizing the emotions of each partner in daily life could provide an insight into their emotional well-being in chronic disease management. The emotions of partners are currently inferred in the lab and daily life using self-reports which are not practical for continuous emotion assessment or observer reports which are manual, time-intensive, and costly. Currently, there exists no comprehensive overview of works on emotion recognition among couples. Furthermore, approaches for emotion recognition among couples have (1) focused on English-speaking couples in the U.S., (2) used data collected from the lab, and (3) performed recognition using observer ratings rather than partner's self-reported / subjective emotions. In this body of work contained in this thesis (8 papers - 5 published and 3 currently under review in various journals), we fill the current literature gap on couples' emotion recognition, develop emotion recognition systems using 161 hours of data from a total of 1,051 individuals, and make contributions towards taking couples' emotion recognition from the lab which is the status quo, to daily life. This thesis contributes toward building automated emotion recognition systems that would eventually enable partners to monitor their emotions in daily life and enable the delivery of interventions to improve their emotional well-being.Comment: PhD Thesis, 2022 - ETH Zuric

    ActivityAware: Wearable System for Real-Time Physical Activity Monitoring among the Elderly

    Physical activity helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and obesity. The ability to monitor a person’s daily activity level can inform self-management of physical activity and related interventions. For older adults with obesity, the importance of regular, physical activity is critical to reduce the risk of long-term disability. In this work, we present ActivityAware, an application on the Amulet wrist-worn device that monitors the daily activity levels (low, moderate and vigorous) of older adults in real-time. The app continuously collects acceleration data on the Amulet, classifies the current activity level, updates the day’s accumulated time spent at that activity level, displays the results on the screen and logs summary data for later analysis. The app implements an activity-level detection model we developed using a Linear Support Vector Machine (SVM). We trained our model using data from a user study, where subjects performed common physical activities (sit, stand, lay down, walk and run). We obtained accuracies up to 99.2% and 98.5% with 10-fold cross validation and leave-one-subject-out (LOSO) cross-validation respectively. We ran a week-long field study to evaluate the utility, usability and battery life of the ActivityAware system where 5 older adults wore the Amulet as it monitored their activity level. The utility evaluation showed that the app was somewhat useful in achieving the daily physical activity goal. The usability feedback showed that the ActivityAware system has the potential to be used by people for monitoring their activity levels. Our energy-efficiency evaluation revealed a battery life of at least 1 week before needing to recharge. The results are promising, indicating that the app may be used for activity-level monitoring by individuals or researchers for epidemiological studies, and eventually for the development of interventions that could improve the health of older adults

    StressAware: App for Continuously Measuring and Monitoring Stress Levels in Real Time on the Amulet Wearable Device

    Stress is the root cause of many diseases. Being able to monitor when and why a person is stressed could inform personal stress management as well as interventions when necessary. In this thesis, I present StressAware, an application on the Amulet wearable platform to measure the stress levels of individuals continuously and in real time. The app implements a stress detection model, continuously streams heart rate data from a commercial heart-rate monitor such as a Zephyr and Polar H7, classifies the stress level of an individual, logs the stress level and then displays it as a graph on the screen. I developed a stress detection model using a Linear Support Vector Machine. I trained my classifiers using data from 3 sources: PhysioNet, a public database with various physiological data, a field study, where subjects went about their normal daily activities and a lab study in a controlled environment, where subjects were exposed to various stressors. I used 73 data segments of stress data obtained from PhysioNet, 120 data segments from the field study, and 14 data segments from the lab study. I extracted 14 heart rate and heart rate variability features. With 10-fold cross validation for Radial Basis Function (RBF) SVM, I obtained an accuracy of 94.5% for the PhysioNet dataset and 100% for the field study dataset. And for the lab study, I obtained an accuracy of 64.29% with leave-one-out cross-validation. Testing the StressAware app revealed a projected battery life of up to 12 days before needing to recharge. Also, the usability feedback from subjects showed that the Amulet and Zephyr have a potential to be used by people for monitoring their stress levels. The results are promising, indicating that the app may be used for stress detection, and eventually for the development of stress-related intervention that could improve the health of individuals

    Emotion elicitation and capture among real couples in the lab

    Couples’ relationships affect partners’ mental and physical well-being. Automatic recognition of couples’ emotions will not only help to better understand the interplay of emotions, intimate relationships, and health and well-being, but also provide crucial clinical insights into protective and risk factors of relationships, and can ultimately guide interventions. However, several works developing emotion recognition algorithms use data from actors in artificial dyadic interactions and the algorithms are likely not to perform well on real couples. We are developing emotion recognition methods using data from real couples and, in this paper, we describe two studies we ran in which we collected emotion data from real couples — Dutch-speaking couples in Belgium and German-speaking couples in Switzerland. We discuss our approach to eliciting and capturing emotions and make five recommendations based on their relevance for developing well-performing emotion recognition systems for couples

    Students’ awareness and use of Information Communication Technology in the Walton Whaley Library of the Valley View University in Ghana

    Information Communication Technology has increasingly become very important in our daily lives and also in our Ghanaian educational system. Realising the positive effect of ICT in the educational system and most importantly in the navigation of library resources, this study sought to investigate the awareness and use of ICT in the Walton Whaley Library (WWL) of the Valley View University (VVU) in Ghana. The study employed the quantitative approach and used questionnaire to collect data from a total a sample of two hundred and twenty-six (226) students using the simple random sampling technique. The study revealed that majority of the students were aware and accessed the various ICT facilities in the library under investigation. The study also discovered that photocopiers, internet and computer services were highly patronised. However, CD-ROMs and scanning services of the library were least patronised. The study recommended that although, the respondents were aware of the ICT facilities available in the library, management should intensify the awareness creation for all students through library orientations, user education as well as seminars and workshops. Lastly, students who want to pursue higher education must endeavor to acquire ICT skills. Testing the ActivityAware app revealed a projected battery life of up to 4 weeks before needing to recharge. The results are promising, indicating that the app may be used for activity-level monitoring, and eventually for the development of interventions that could improve the health of individuals

    Laboratory investigation of the performance properties of hot mix asphalt containing waste glass

    CSIR is currently undertaking a study on the potential utilization of crushed glass as a substitute material to natural aggregate in asphalt mixes. As part of the study, a laboratory investigation is needed to determine the performance characteristics of hot-mix-asphalt produced with the crushed glass material. In this paper, the glass asphalt mix is evaluated for its stiffness characteristics, rutting potential and fatigue performance and compared with a dense- graded asphalt surfacing mix. The results indicate that the asphalt mix with crushed glass could outperform the conventional dense-graded mix in terms of rutting. The fatigue performance was comparable although the conventional mix performed marginally better than the glass asphalt mix. This fatigue behaviour is attributed to the fact that the glass asphalt mix was stiffer than the conventional mix at typical field conditions, i.e. temperature of 20?C and a loading frequency of 10Hz.     The Role Psychological Contract Plays in Organizational Behaviour: A Case Study of a Public University in Ghana

    This paper examined the role of psychological contract on organisational behaviour and organisational commitment. A case study approach of research design was adopted in gathering data from 65 respondents from a public university in Ghana. Stratified random sampling method was employed to group the respondents into strata. Purposive sampling method was then employed to select the respondents for the study. The field data was analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Results from the study showed that commitment between employer and employees depend on the fulfilment of the perceived expectations between the two parties. Again, the study pointed out that majority of the employees would leave the organisation if their perceived expectations were not met. The study recommended that aside the written conditions of contract, employees must behave appropriately so that they will get the best from management

    Corporate governance and voluntary disclosures in annual reports: a post-International Financial Reporting Standard adoption evidence from an emerging capital market

    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide an empirical evidence concerning the influence of Corporate governance and voluntary disclosures in annual reports: a post-International Financial Reporting Standards adoption evidence from an emerging capital market. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from the annual reports of all 22 listed non-financial firms over a five-year period. Using content analysis, the audited annual reports of the firms were scored on the extent of overall and four specific types of voluntary disclosures made. The panel data obtained were analyzed using a generalized ordinary least squares regression model. Findings The findings of the study show that voluntary disclosures among the firms are low even after the adoption of IFRS. Corporate governance attributes of board size and board leadership structure are significant determinants of the extent of voluntary disclosures made by the firms. However, board independence and auditor type exhibit only a significant positive effect on voluntary financial and forward-looking information disclosures. Research limitations/implications Firms’ voluntary information disclosure and governance variables were restricted to those in annual reports, which may partially reflect the reality of firms’ disclosure and governance practices. Practical implications The present study offers useful insights to regulators of the capital market to strengthen monitoring of firms to ensure strict adherence to corporate governance best practice guidelines as a means of improving information environment.
